Career History: Born in Hollister, California, Gary joined the U. S. Navy
in August of 1959. He served as the layman on the boat and led Sunday
Worship Services in the crews mess. He married his wife Cindy in September
of 1960. He was Honorably Discharged in July of 1965 as a MM1(SS).
After the Navy, his career included employment with Arco Solar, Siemens Solar,
and the Jet Propulsion Lab. He retired as a Senior Research Scientist with Rockwell
Scientific Company. He was also a graduate of Cal State University with a Bachelor
of Science Degree majoring in Physics. He was a great supporter of Kaps 4 Kids and
actively involved in his church and went on two mission trips to donate and
install solar panels.
Memories: Qualified on the Grant on his first and only patrol in the Pacific. A finer
shipmate you will never meet. Gary will be remembered by all his shipmates as
a loyal and caring man.

Career History: Bob enlisted in the Navy on Jan 17, 1947. In 1959, he made the
decision to enter the Submarine Service and served on five submarines;
USS Sarda (SS488), USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN610), USS U.S. Grant
(SSBN631), USS Sea Dragon (SSN584) and USS Scamp (SSN588).
He retired on August 1, 1966. He was a plank member of the Sub Vets
Corvina Base of Reno, Nevada.
Memories: Bob loved the submarine service and wore his submariner ball hat
everywhere he went. He had a sign on the back of his van that stated,
“There are only two types of ships – Submarines and Targets”.
Bob was a super nice man and a great shipmate. He will be missed by all.

Career History: Richard’s assignment to Hawaii was in 1961 when he arrived in
Honolulu to oversee a squadron of nuclear submarines at Pearl Harbor. Wanting to settle
in Hawaii with his wife and children, Richard left the Navy for a manufacturing manager
position with Dole Co. But the company sent him abroad, launching his career as an
international businessman. Later in life he followed his wife, Penny, who had joined the
State Department, to her diplomatic posts in numerous cities on five continents while he
worked as a financial adviser at the different embassies. Despite their life around the
globe, the couple always returned home to Hawaii. He also loved diversity, even in his
own family, with one son-in-law conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh and
the other a Rastafarian from St. Kitts and Nevis, Richard graduated from the U.S. Naval
Academy with classmate Sen. John McCain.

Career History: After serving on the USS Grant and the USS James Polk (72-73), he
was assigned shore duty at the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific
in Silverdale, Washington. He retired in 1977. Two weeks later,
Lockheed called him to work, in the same building, doing the same job as a senior
mechanic. John worked for them for nine years. He was awarded the National
Defense Service Medal, Navy Commendation, six Good Conduct Medals and the
Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Chief Fellipo was a credit to his uniform and
dedicated to his work in the service of his country.
Memories: Chief “Flip” enjoyed bowling and yard work. He had a terrific
personality and was well liked by all who met him. Crewmembers remember the Chief
as a very lively character and a good and decent man. Mary Jane and the family miss
him greatly. Mary Jane states that “It brings me comfort knowing we have young
men today with the same qualities as Flip had; Loyalty, Dedication and a Love for
those `Silent Giants of the Sea’. God bless them and all of you who served us so well”.

Career History: Don served six months aboard the USS Ronquil, an experimental
destroyer, testing the German sonar equipment and evaluating its use in anti-submarine
warfare. While in the Navy, Don went to school and studied about a new technology,
Nuclear Submarines. Don was the top student in his class which gave him the honor of
becoming the first helmsman of the first operational nuclear-powered submarine, “The
Nautilus”. Don served on various submarines in the U.S. Navy (1948-1956), acted as
watch stander and navigator on the U.S.S. Nautilus, Criminal Investigator for NAS
(1956-1957), U.S.S. Pomodon (SS486) senior enlisted navigator (1958-1959), U.S.S.
Sculpin (SSN 590) (1959-1963), senior enlisted navigator (Quartermaster Chief E-7)
aboard nuclear attack submarine, U.S. Batfish (SS310) Reserve Submarine from (1963-
1967), and U.S. Army Transportation School, Harbor Deck Officer’s Course resulting in
a transfer from the U.S. Navy to the U.S. Army. Don transferred from the Navy as a
Chief Warrant Officer to the Army due to the need of Tugboat Skippers to lead their
men and he had the qualifications they were looking for. Serving as the Harbor Master,
the army sent him straight to Vietnam on a 100 foot tug boat with 16 crewmen to
transport ammunition and various supplies. Don ended his military career in October of
1969 after a four-month special assignment in the Far East. Don retired as Chief Warrant
Officer in the U.S. Army in October 1969. Don earned many honors and medals
including a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medals, National Defense
Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Expert Badge with Rifle Bar, Vietnam Service
Medal with 4 Campaign Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, Bronze Star, 2

City Personnel, and the Maskat Shrine 45-year pin. Don was inducted in 1992 as a
Charter member of the ASA/USA Umpire Hall of Honor. In 2012, Don attended the 60th
reunion of the Nautilus and donated numerous items that are now displayed in the
Nautilus Submarine Museum in Groton, Connecticut. Don also played a cameo scene in
a movie with John Wayne. He was an avid fisher and hunter. He also loved to watch the
Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys.

Career History: Graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1956. He served on
numerous submarines and was the last Commanding Officer of the USS Razorback.
He retired from the Navy in 1979 as a Captain and began a 25 year career with
several companies that supported the Navy.

SSN-591 and the USS Pargo SSN-650. Retired in 1992 as MMC(SS).

Career History: After leaving the USS Grant in 1967, Jay entered the NESEP program
at the Universtiy of Utah and received an Electrical Engineering Degree. He retired
from the Navy in 1983 at a Lt. Commander. After the Navy, he was employed as a
Military Satellite Communications Engineer in Colorado Springs until his passing.
