I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying your summer. Please remember that our reunion is quickly approaching and we still have rooms available at the hotel. The Cruise is booked and Canada is going to be a great experience.
As you read the POD, you will notice that we have a number of things planned for the day. Tuesday, October 13th, the Grant Hospitality Room (GHR) will be open at 1600. We will be doing photos during registration so please be ready to have your picture taken. MidRats will start at 1800 and since it just happens to be the U.S.NAVY Birthday, we will have a birthday celebration. Time to catch up with other Shipmates and renew friendships from the previous reunions,
Wednesday, we will be going to the Submarine Training Facility (STF) and to the Chrysler Museum of Art. We only have one day for the STF so if you plan to do both, this is the day to attend the Submarine Training Facility.. If either of those activities don’t trip your trigger, then we will have a list of other places in the Norfolk area you can visit. At 1800, we will be doing our Remembrance Ceremony to honor our Shipmates that have gone on Eternal Patrol. We ask that everyone please attend. After the Remembrance Ceremony, we will have our Pizza Party. Everything will be conducted in the GHR.
Thursday, we have a trip planned to the Nauticus. The Nauticus is the current home of the USS WISCONSIN (BB 64). It was built 2 years after Pearl harbor and commissioned in April 1944. She was decommissioned in 1958 but then recommissioned in 1988 after being upgraded with Tomahawk and Harpoon missiles. She was decommissioned in 1991 and in 2006, she was finally struck from the Naval Vessel Register. She was transferred to Norfolk and has been a floating museum since 2006. The Nauticus also has a boat tour where you will be taken up the Elizabeth River to see the ships and submarines docked at Naval Station Norfolk. After that, we will have the soup & sandwich night in the GHR.
Friday, October 16, is your free day. You will have time to explore Norfolk and revisit the Chrysler Museum or other area attractions. We will secure the GHR at 1600 so that we can set up for the banquet which starts at 1800. After the dinner, there will be a business meeting with elections for the Alumni Association.
There will be daily drawing for door prizes, along with the “ship store” selling cups, hats and even a few shirts. Come join the fun and fellowship.
