Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays, and welcome to wintertime. It has been a very good year for the GRANT Alumni Association with various gatherings around the country and catching up with our Shipmates.
In April, we had a mini reunion in Mobile, AL that coincided with the Tolling of the Boats at the USS ALABAMA Battleship Memorial Park. At the park, there is the USS DRUM that is open for tours. We were able to ride down to Gulfport, MS and tour the Armed Forces Retirement Home(AFRH). The home has a number of submarine Sailors so we brought some of them with us to the Memorial Park for the Tolling of the Boats. Afterwards, we treated them to lunch before returning them to Gulfport.
In November, group of us met in St Mary’s for the Subvets of WWII Memorial Week. The week was full of tours and guest speakers. St Marys Submarine museum was open for tours and we were able to tour the Trident Training Facility as well as USS Rhode Island. The Commanding Officer of Kings Bay as well as CO of TTF were on hand to join in the Memorial service as well as the dinners that were hosted by the TTF CPOA and Squadron 36 CPOA. Keith Post is the Executive Director at the St Marys Submarine Museum and has offered his expertise in working with us for our reunion.
Jacksonville is growing and has a lot to offer. We will be centrally located between the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport, and Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. If you are into golf, there are public courses all over. The CO of Kings Bay has informed us that his course is rated the best on the east coast!
Make you reservations and don’t forget that we will have a cruise following the land portion of the reunion. There will be lots of door prizes and lots of memories to share. Please have a safe holiday season and make plans to join us the first week of October in Jacksonville, Florida.
